Leesburg, VA | A Weekend Along the Potomac

We did a quick getaway to Leesburg, Virginia over the weekend and had an amazing time! We initially had the trip planned to attend a friend’s wedding. Although we were bummed that she had to downsize the guest list last minute, we decided to keep the hotel reservation. It also looked like she had a beautiful wedding day – so overall it was still a great weekend! Leesburg was such a cute town, and it was also located within close proximity of several attractions along the Potomac River. I am sharing below where we stayed and some of the places we visited – although we certainly didn’t get to see everything the area has to offer!

Lansdowne Resort & Spa

We stayed 2 nights at Lansdowne Resort & Spa and were very pleased! The resort is dog friendly, which is always a plus in our book! We felt comfortable with the COVID-19 precautions that were in place. The golf course was operating, however the spa facilities were closed. We enjoyed eating at the Piedmonts restaurant for both breakfast and dinner. They had a large, dog friendly patio that was heated and had great views.

Washington

If you’re wondering where Leesburg, Virginia is – it’s only 45 minutes away from Washington, DC! We stopped there on our way to Leesburg to visit my dad for lunch. I highly recommend taking the George Washington Memorial Highway – it was so beautiful driving along the Potomac River! There were several overlooks to stop at, as well as many great trails and parks to stop and take in all of the views.

Great Falls National Park

We spent the morning on Saturday at Great Falls National Park and WOW! The views were even more gorgeous than we thought they would be! The history of the area was also super interesting. It costs $20 per car to enter the park. The price was well worth it as we spent over 3 hours there seeing all of the sights. Make sure you visit the dam, the 3 overlooks of the falls, and definitely hike one of the trails to see the views from the top!

Stone Tower Winery

When researching what to do in the area before the trip, we noticed that there were a ton of breweries and wineries. We decided to go to a winery since we had never been to one before, and we had the BEST experience at Stone Tower Winery! The views of the vineyards and Hogback Mountain were gorgeous. On the weekends, the stone tower sitting area is reserved for members, and nonmembers are welcome to sit along the lawn and in the barn. The sitting areas were spread out by more than 6 feet. The food selections are different due to COVID, but they do sell individual packs of crackers, prosciutto, salami, and cheese for snacking. There was also a BBQ food truck on site.

Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park

There are tons of walking trails in the town of Leesburg. We decided to take a walk at the Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park on Sunday morning. This trail was connected to the golf course at our hotel. The views were not the most scenic as it was hard to see the river at times. But it was a great trail for exercise and Sunny really enjoyed it! If you’re looking for a dog friendly weekend getaway in the northern Virginia area, I highly recommend checking out Leesburg! The Lansdowne Resort & Spa was a great place to stay, and there were several trails, parks, and restaurants with outdoor seating.
