Long Weekend Abroad | A Priceless Trip to Italy

I unintentionally took some time off from writing on my blog, but it’s 2026 and I’m excited to be back! I couldn’t start sharing content in the new year without recapping one of my favorite trips from 2025. It was a spontaneous trip, which often turn out to be some of the best. My husband was traveling to Europe for work and I decided at the last minute to meet him in Italy and spend a long weekend there. Whenever I’m asked what’s my favorite place I’ve ever visited, I often say Italy (specifically Rome). So anytime we have the opportunity to explore this unique city plus visit my husband’s family, we certainly take it. I’m recapping below last year’s priceless trip to Italy!

Travel Day

I traveled to Rome one afternoon after work, and was ready to hit the ground running for my first evening there upon arrival. I met up with my husband and in laws and quickly checked into our stunning Airbnb. We were staying 2 nights in the heart of Rome, directly across from the Pantheon. You can see the listing here. We walked by the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona on our way to dinner at Giulio Passami l’Olio. It was very delicious and we recommend!

Full Day in Rome

Today was our only full day in Rome and I made it my mission to eat all of the foods I’d been craving since my last visit! First up was a cappuccino and almond croissant. You really can’t go wrong with any of the cafes in Rome. We then visited the Vatican, which was especially exciting as it was a jubilee year. We were able to walk through the holy doors that only open every 25 years.

We made our way over to the picturesque Colosseum which is always a must. Next up on the food bucket list was some authentic Italian pizza with an Aperol Spritz, followed up with some tiramisu for dessert. Walking around Rome in the heat is not easy, so I’d like to think we more than burned off those calories before dinner haha! We stopped by a few other churches (there are so many gorgeous ones in Rome), before heading back to the Airbnb to change for dinner. If you’re looking for a truly delicious pasta in Rome, you have to eat in Trastevere. We have been many times and the food is always top tier. This time we chose Rione 13.

Our Time in L’Aquila

The best part of visiting Italy is getting to spend time with my husband’s family, who live about an hour outside of Rome. We headed to L’Aquila where we were greeted by family, delicious food, and these gorgeous views at my husband’s grandma’s house. I love the downtown area of L’Aquila, and if you ever find yourself in the area you should definitely check it out.

Gran Sasso

During our short time in L’Aquila we were able to visit Gran Sasso. I’ve been during the winter, but visitng during this mild September weather was beautiful! The pictures do not do the views justice. We rode through the mountains and up to the top where they have food and drinks. If you love nature, you have to add this to your bucket list! Needless to say this was a priceless trip to Italy and I’m thankful for the opportunity to have spent such a beautiful weekend abroad with family. Until next time!
